Free drug and alcohol treatment in the UK
Every area of the UK has free drug and alcohol services, funded by the NHS or the local council. They offer assessment, counselling, community detox and support groups, and in most areas you can refer yourself without seeing a GP. Funded places in residential rehab exist, but they're limited and decided by your local service after an assessment, so ask early.
Private rehab in the UK
Private rehab means you or your insurer pay, and you can usually start within days rather than weeks. Most residential programmes are charged per week, with 28 days the most common length. Always ask what's included in writing: detox, medication, therapy hours and aftercare.

Types of treatment
- Residential rehab: you live on site, usually for 2 to 12 weeks, with daily therapy.
- Medical detox: supervised withdrawal, essential for alcohol and some drugs where stopping suddenly can be dangerous.
- Outpatient and day rehab: treatment while living at home.
- Aftercare and sober living: support once a programme ends, when it matters most.

How much does rehab cost in the UK?
Private residential rehab is charged per week and varies by clinic, room type and how much medical care is involved. Our listings show each provider's own prices. NHS and council-funded treatment is free.
How do I get rehab on the NHS?
Contact your local drug and alcohol service or speak to your GP. They'll assess you and agree a plan, which may include community treatment, detox or, in some cases, a funded residential place.
How long does rehab last?
Many residential programmes run for 28 days. Detox alone often takes 7 to 10 days, and longer programmes of 8 to 12 weeks are common for long-standing problems.
Does private health insurance cover rehab?
Some policies do, often with limits. Check your policy and ask the provider whether they work with your insurer.
Do I need a referral for private rehab?
No. You can contact a private provider directly. Telling your GP is still a good idea, especially if you take medication.
