If you're worried about someone else
You can't make someone ready, but you can look after yourself and keep the door open. Al-Anon, Adfam and Nacoa support families and friends, and you don't need the other person's permission to call.
12 step fellowships
For many people, the rooms are where recovery starts and stays. Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and similar fellowships are free, run by their members, and there are meetings everywhere.
What happens next
- Talk first. A helpline can help you understand your options without any commitment.
- See your GP or local service. In the UK, free drug and alcohol services can assess you, and in most areas you can refer yourself.
- Compare options when you're ready. Our directory lists rehab and detox providers with their regulator, costs and contact details.
