When your mum or dad is drinking or using drugs
Growing up with, or now caring for, a parent who drinks or uses drugs can be confusing and painful. It is not your job to fix it, and it was never your fault.
Things you might notice
- Drinking hidden around the house
- Falls, forgetfulness or missed appointments
- Mixing alcohol with prescription medication
- Mood changes, especially in the evenings
- Withdrawing from friends and family
These can have other causes. Noticing them is a reason to talk, not proof of anything.
Starting the conversation
- Older parents may feel ashamed. Raise it gently and privately.
- Link it to things they care about: health, grandchildren, independence.
- Their GP can be a good first step, and you can go with them.
- If you're under 18, tell a trusted adult or call Nacoa or Childline.
Looking after yourself
- Nacoa supports anyone affected by a parent's drinking, at any age.
- Set boundaries that protect your own home and family.
- It's okay to love them and still feel angry.
