Choosing treatment

Questions to ask before choosing a rehab

Look beyond the photos. Ask about care, costs, safety and what happens afterwards.

Ask about the care, not just the setting

Who will assess your needs? Who provides medical care, and what qualifications do they hold? Ask how the service supports physical and mental health needs alongside alcohol or drug use.

If detox may be needed, ask whether it is available on site, who supervises it and how emergencies are handled. Check registration with the relevant regulator where applicable, and ask what that registration covers.

Get the full cost in writing

Ask what the quoted price includes: assessment, accommodation, therapy, medication, detox and aftercare. Check what is charged separately and what happens if the stay needs to be longer or shorter.

Read the cancellation and refund terms before paying a deposit. Be cautious about pressure to book immediately or promises of a guaranteed outcome.

Think about life after treatment

Ask how an aftercare plan is made and whether follow-up support is included. What help is available when you return home? Can family or friends be involved with your consent?

For treatment abroad, also check travel arrangements, visa requirements, insurance exclusions and how ongoing care will be handed over at home. Comparing answers can be more useful than comparing marketing claims.
